What hip pain feels like
Hip pain can feel like a deep ache in the groin, a sharp pinch when you climb stairs or stand up from a low chair, or a dull soreness on the outside of your hip that flares up after walking or running. Some people feel it most first thing in the morning. Others feel it after sitting too long, or notice a limp creeping into their walk. It can make simple things — getting out of a car, tying your shoes, sleeping on your side — uncomfortable or even impossible some days.
Why the hip often is not the problem
Hip pain is often a symptom of how the whole lower body is working together, not just a problem with the hip joint itself. The hip sits between your spine and your knee, so it tends to absorb whatever those areas are not handling well. The real question is why your hip is under so much strain in the first place.
In our experience, a few patterns come up often:
- A core and pelvis that are not stable. When your trunk cannot hold steady, your hip muscles work overtime just to keep you balanced with every step.
- Glutes that are not firing properly. Weak or inactive glutes force smaller hip muscles to take on work they were never meant to carry alone, which can lead to pinching or aching.
- Stiff ankles or a stiff opposite hip. When one joint does not move well, the hip next to it often twists or compensates to make up the difference.
- Muscle imbalances from old habits. Favouring one leg, years of sitting, or repetitive movement in sport or work can slowly pull the hip out of its ideal alignment.
Every hip is different, and often more than one of these plays a role. That is why we do not guess — we test.
How we approach hip pain in Scarborough
- Assess (90 minutes, head to toe). We test your hips, core, glutes, ankles, posture, and how you move — not just the hip itself. You leave knowing which links in the chain are weak, tight, or not doing their share.
- Correct. You get a simple exercise plan aimed at the cause we found in your assessment — not a generic hip stretching sheet.
- Re-test. We measure again, so you can see on paper that your hip is working better, not just feeling better for a day.
We work alongside your doctor, physio, or chiropractor — not instead of them. Many clients come to us after passive treatments eased the pain for a while, but it kept coming back because the real cause was never addressed.
